Case Study · Migration + Redesign

From Magento 2 to Shopify-
a complete migration
and a brand-new store.

Lumination is a well-established UK lighting retailer with a catalogue spanning interior, exterior, and commercial products. We moved their entire operation from Magento 2 to Shopify: every product, every customer account, every order record. Not a single data point lost. Alongside the migration, we built a custom Shopify 2.0 theme from scratch, giving the brand a store that finally matches the quality of what it sells.

A UK lighting specialist with a product range to match

Lumination sells lighting. A lot of it. Interior pendants, outdoor wall lights, commercial LED fittings, smart home systems, decorative sconces, track lighting and more. It's a broad catalogue, built up over years, sold to homeowners and trade customers across the UK. By the time we got involved, they'd been running on Magento 2 long enough for the cracks to start showing.

Support costs were climbing. Development work that should've taken days was taking weeks. And performance on mobile had slipped to a point where it was visibly affecting the shopping experience. Our Magento 2 to Shopify migration service was exactly what they needed, but it had to be done carefully. Years of accumulated SEO authority and a complete customer database were on the line.

The brief was clear: move everything to Shopify without losing a single ranking signal or a single record, then build a store that reflects the quality of the products inside it. We've done over 100 migrations at this point. This one still stands out.

Understanding the scale of the project

Before touching a single file, we spent time understanding what Lumination actually is. Four things shaped every architecture and design decision that followed.

01
5,000+ lighting products across interior, exterior & commercial categories
That's not just a big catalogue, it's a technically detailed one. Wattage, fitting type, IP ratings, colour temperature, dimmability, beam angle. Every attribute needed careful planning before we could design the migration architecture.
02
A well-established organic search presence
Product and collection URLs that had been accumulating ranking signals for years. That organic traffic isn't easy to rebuild if you lose it. Protecting it wasn't a nice-to-have on this project, it was the first thing we agreed on.
03
Thousands of customer accounts and order history
A loyal customer base with accounts, order records, and purchase history. We had to transfer all of it cleanly. Customers shouldn't notice the platform changed, let alone lose access to their own data.
04
A complex product attribute structure
Lighting specs don't map cleanly to standard Shopify fields. Lumen output, colour temperature, beam angle, IP rating, fitting type, bulb type. Getting these into Shopify's metafield system correctly, from day one, was one of the most important parts of the whole project.

A platform that had become a barrier to growth

Lumination had the products, the customers, and the search rankings. Magento 2 had become the thing getting in the way. These were the four specific risks we were brought in to deal with.

Platform
Magento 2 was becoming a liability
Maintenance costs were going up. Security patching was a constant overhead. Development work required more specialist resource than the store's actual complexity justified. Magento 2 had done its job, but it wasn't an enabler anymore. It was a cost centre.
SEO
SEO equity at serious risk
Hundreds of high-ranking product and collection URLs, built up over years of work. A migration that doesn't correctly redirect old URLs to their Shopify equivalents hands those rankings to competitors. We mapped every URL before migration began. None of them were left to chance.
Data
Product data complexity
A 5,000+ product catalogue with technical specification attributes that don't have direct Shopify equivalents. Getting that data into Shopify's metafield system cleanly, without losing spec integrity or creating a mess of custom fields, required careful architecture work before a single product was imported.
Design
The existing store no longer represented the brand
The Magento theme was dated, and it wasn't performing on mobile. The migration was the right moment to invest in a new design. Lumination's product range deserved a buying experience that actually reflected it, so we built one from scratch. You can see more of how we approach this in our store design service.

A surgical migration, built to protect everything

We ran the Lumination migration across six structured phases, from discovery and URL auditing through to a managed launch day and post-launch monitoring. Every decision came back to one thing: protect what they'd built on Magento, and build something better on Shopify. If you're looking at a similar move, our platform migration service covers the full process.

Phase 01
Discovery, URL Audit & Data Mapping
We started with a full crawl of the existing Magento 2 store: every product URL, every collection URL, every CMS page. Then came a complete product attribute mapping exercise, documenting each custom field and its Shopify equivalent. We reviewed the customer data structure and built a full 301 redirect plan before any migration work started.
Phase 02
Product Data Architecture & Migration Planning
We designed the Shopify metafield schema to hold all of Lumination's technical product attributes: IP ratings, colour temperature, lumen output, fitting type, dimmability, and more. Then we built a category taxonomy from the ground up, making a 5,000-product catalogue actually navigable. This is where the filtering architecture starts, not in development.
Phase 03
Custom Shopify 2.0 Theme Design
A new visual direction for Lumination: clean, product-led, and built to showcase the full range with editorial impact. We wireframed key page templates, including the homepage, collection pages, product pages, and landing pages, and got them approved before any theme development began. No surprises mid-build.
Phase 04
Data Migration & 301 Redirect Implementation
Products, customers, orders, and CMS content were migrated in stages, first to a staging environment for validation, then to production. Every old Magento URL was redirected to its new Shopify equivalent with a permanent 301, passing the full SEO equity of the existing domain across to the new store. Our approach to Shopify SEO during migrations is one of the things clients consistently mention.
Phase 05
Theme Development & Specification Metafield Integration
The custom Shopify 2.0 theme was built with lighting-specific product pages that display technical specification data clearly. Collection filtering by IP rating, colour temperature, fitting type, and room application was implemented using Shopify's native filter system, tied directly to the metafield schema we designed in Phase 02. Tight integration across both phases meant zero rework.
Phase 06
QA, Performance Optimisation & Launch
Pre-launch testing covered every product data field, every redirect, every filter combination, and full cross-device QA. We ran a Core Web Vitals pass before DNS cutover, as we do on all speed optimisation work. The launch itself was a managed event with 48-hour post-launch monitoring so we could catch anything before it became a problem.

Four outcomes that defined the project's success

The migration gave Lumination a modern, high-performance Shopify store. No products lost, no customers lost, no search rankings dropped. Here are the four areas that mattered most. If you're curious how this compares to other work we've done, take a look at Bubbaroo, another Magento migration with its own set of challenges.

01 — Migration
Zero-data-loss Magento 2 to Shopify transfer
Every product, customer, and order transferred cleanly. Technical specification attributes preserved using Shopify metafields. No data loss. No customer disruption. Not a single record unaccounted for.
02 — SEO
Full organic search equity preserved
Complete 301 redirect implementation covering every old URL. Pre and post-launch SEO crawls confirmed ranking signals passed correctly. Organic search visibility didn't drop. That's the result we aim for on every migration.
03 — Design
A new theme designed around the product range
A clean, lighting-focused Shopify 2.0 theme that gives Lumination an online presence that actually reflects the range they carry. Editorial, fast, and built to convert on every screen size. You can see more about how we approach this kind of work in our store design service.
04 - Performance
Filtering & specification architecture for 5,000+ SKUs
Faceted filtering by IP rating, colour temperature, fitting type, and room application, all backed by metafields we structured from the start. A large, technically detailed lighting catalogue that's actually navigable for every customer who lands on it.

Shopify 2.0 custom theme built from scratch

Built on the right foundation

Every technology decision came back to the same question: will this make Lumination's store simpler to manage, faster to load, and easier to grow? After years of Magento 2 overhead, those weren't abstract goals, they were specific things the team had been waiting for.

Shopify
Shopify replaced Magento 2 as the core platform. The Lumination team got a dramatically simpler management experience, a stronger app ecosystem, native analytics, and a total cost of ownership that made sense for their business.
Shopify 2.0 Custom Theme
A fully bespoke Shopify 2.0 theme with flexible sections and blocks, custom metafield display for technical product specifications, and a visual language built specifically for a large lighting catalogue. No off-the-shelf template.
Metafields & Metaobjects
Shopify's native metafield system stores and displays Lumination's technical lighting specs: lumen output, IP rating, colour temperature, beam angle, fitting type. All structured at the schema level, all displayed cleanly on product pages.
Shopify Native Search & Filtering
Metafield-driven faceted filtering that lets customers browse by room, fitting type, IP rating, colour temperature, and dimmability. We used Shopify's native filter system rather than a third-party search app, which kept the performance footprint lean.
301 Redirect Architecture
A redirect map built from the full Magento URL crawl, covering every product, collection, and CMS page. Every old URL passes its ranking signals to the correct new Shopify URL. Zero broken links post-launch.
Core Web Vitals Optimisation
A pre-launch performance pass covering image optimisation, lazy loading, critical CSS inlining, and script deferral. We tune this specifically for image-heavy catalogues, where it makes the biggest difference. More on how we approach this in our speed optimisation service.
